A 20 francs gold coin from the Third French Republic. These small, high-purity gold coins would have represented nearly a week's work for the average Parisian. These coins are popularly known as Roosters due to the reverse design. The rooster is a national emblem of France-the rooster's crowing at the dawn of each new day was considered a symbol of the victory of light over darkness and of good over evil.
